MARC Webinar: More Top Tips

On September 20, 2012, we held a MARC webinar featuring bloggers Bill Proudman, Michael Kimmel, and Frank McCloskey. All three shared practical advice about steps men can take to promote equality, including the following advice to men: 1) Support other men in making positive changes in the workplace, like taking paternity leave. For example, say to your male peers, “You want to take paternity leave? That’s great! You’ll be an excellent father.” 2) Don’t try to protect the women you mentor or sponsor from failure or risky opportunities—and don’t make assumptions about what challenges women colleagues can take on. Give women the respect of offering the same opportunities that you offer to men. 3) Help other men understand that supporting equality benefits men too—not just women. MARC Member Webinar – 9/20/12

Our first MARC webinar featured MARC bloggers Bill Proudman, Michael Kimmel and Frank McCloskey, who shared steps men can take to promote equality and improve cross-gender relationships in the workplace. Tips included:

  • Be a role model to other men by forming high-quality relationships with women colleagues. As a leader, your relationships—who you share information, resources and your time with—create power dynamics and hierarchies in your organization. Ask yourself, do my relationships with colleagues signal—even unwittingly—that men are more valued than women? (56% webinar attendees said that more men leaders need to role model positive cross-gender relationships.
  • Support other men in making positive changes in the workplace, like taking paternity leave. Say, to your male peers, “You want to take paternity leave? That’s great! You’ll be an excellent father.”
  • Don’t try to protect the women you mentor or sponsor from failure or risky opportunities—don’t make assumptions about what challenges women colleagues can take on. Give women the respect of offering the same opportunities that you offer to men.
  • Let go of the myth of meritocracy and unconscious scripting. Study and expose ways in which women and men are held to different standards.
